multiXFinder 0.4.1 is now available from the project page or using the built-in software update feature.

Sometimes software just doesn't want to die. They're used by a small niche of users that care for them and treat them almost like they were living entities, old friends that accompanied each day for many years and that would be deeply missed if they disappeared. And sometimes some of those users take on the baton of development and try to bring new life to the software they care for. And when such software is Open Source it's actually easy to began developing it again, bringing it in par with the most recent technologies and addng new features. That's more or less what happened with me in 2009 and still today I got the impression of being part of that small niche of persons who actually use the menu and care about it: many mails arrived in the last few months from dozens of users worried about the future of multiXFinder and seeking for a way of accomplishing the same tasks in the same way. not bad for an user interface item conceived in the early '90s and removed from the operating system ten years ago.

In the last couple of years I didn't do muych programming, i spent most of my time on a completely different thing (that I will probably write of soon), when Lion came out I consideres pros and cons and, seeing that the new features didn't balance the loss of functionality I would suffer I chose not to update. This is the first time since 2002 I willingly do this choice, I will probably never update to Mac OS X 10.7 (unless i buy a new computer, something very unlikely to happen soon) but I will surely consider again 10.8.

multiXFinder didn't run properly on the new OS, the feedback I got was rather confusing and without having a way to test it myself I could not identify the problem. I hoped that at some point someone would mail me with more precise informations and that's exactly what happened a few days ago when Jacalyn Newman, a long time ASM and multiXFinder user, mailed me, did a few tests and sent me very useful details about the behaviour of the software. details that naturally led to this update.

Version 0.4.1 is the first update of multiXFinder in over two years. It's mainly a compatibility update but it actually includes a very minor bugfix, so it's recommended even to those who, like myself, have no plans about updating to Lion. A volte ci sono programmi che semplicemente non vogliono morire. Sono utilizzati da una ristretta nicchia di persone che se ne occupano e se ne curano come se fossero entità viventi, quando sembrano spacciati, ormai del tutto abbandonati a sé stessi ed incompatibili con le versioni più recenti del sitema operativo ecco che salta fuori un giovane programmatore che li riprende in mano, li aggiorna e li migliora. Questo è quanto è accaduto nel 2009 con ASM, ora multiXFinder, e, in parte, è ciò che accaduto nuovamente ora, con questo aggiornamento.
E, c'è da aggiungere, con un software non Open Source questo sarebbe stato, se non impossibile, estremamente difficile.

In questi due anni ho programmato molto poco, mi sono dedicato a qualcosa di completamente diverso, di cui tratterò sicuramente più avanti, all'uscita di Lion ho considerato l'ipotesi di aggiornare il mio sistema, ho valutato i pro e i contro e mi sono reso conto che questi ultimi avevano di gran lunga la meglio. Ho quindi deciso consciamente, per la prima volta dal 2002, di non adottare da subito una nuova versione del sistema operativo ed anzi di attendere quella successiva.

multiXFinder però non girava correttamente sul nuovo sistema e il feedback fornitomi dai suoi utenti era alquanto contraddittorio. Non avendo a disposizione un sistema Lion su cui cercare di risolvere il problema ho atteso, immaginando che entro breve, grazie al feedback in continuo aumento, sarei riuscito a far luce sul problema e, eventualmente, ad aggiornare il programma. Questo è accaduto solo pochi giorni fa, grazie alle mail di Jacalyn Newman, un utente "anziano" di multiXFinder (già lo usava da prima che ne prendessi in mano lo sviluppo), che mi hanno permesso di risolvere rapidamente il problema e di far uscire questo aggiornamento.

La versione 0.4.1 è il primo aggiornamento di multiXFinder in oltre due anni. È principalmente un aggiornamento di compatibilità ma risolve anche un bug minore che si potrebbe presentare in circostanze estremamente particolari. Con questo aggiornamento il software dovrebbe continuare a funzionare senza problemi almeno fino all'uscita di Mac OS X 10.8.

All systems with the multiXFinder's "disable Spotlight menu" option applied before the update will show the same problem, the current version of the Preference Pane isn't able to fix it. This first 64 bit version for Snow Leopard was built using the Clang/LLVM compiler.

Questa prima versione per Snow Leopard è completamente a 64 bit sia per quanto riguarda il menu che il pannello di Preferenze di Sistema e segna il passaggio al compilatore Clang/LLVM.

In questo momento sono appena uscito da una intensa sessione d'esami, durante la quale il mio tempo libero è stato, prevedibilmente, davvero poco. Nelle ultime settimane non ho putto seguire seriamente nessuno dei miei progetti personali. Classilla è basato sul codice di WaMCom, la versione non ufficiale di Mozilla più aggiornata esistente per Mac OS classico. Rispetto a WaMCom, che era basato su Mozilla 1.3 con delle aggiunte dalla versione 1.4, Classilla è all'incirca in linea con la versione 1.6 e presenta delle modifiche introdotte nella versione 1.8.

Classilla 9.0 richiede Mac OS 8.6 o superiore (Mac OS 9 è comunque consigliato) ed è raccomandata l'eliminazione delle preferenze di precedenti versioni di Mozilla e Netscape o perlomeno l'utilizzo di profili distinti.

Rispetto a WaMCom noto un notevole aumento di velocità e un rendering decisamente migliore su certe pagine (inclusa questa…).

Classilla, come già WaMCom e la suite Mozilla, da cui discende, include un browser, un client email/usenet, un editor HTML, una rubrica e un client IRC, per il momento il team di sviluppo si sta concentrando sul portare al passo coi tempi il browser, specialmente per quanto riguarda la sicurezza e la precisione del motore di rendering.

Ricordo che chi volesse continuare ad utilizzare qualcosa di simile alla suite Mozilla su Mac OS X o su altri sistemi operativi può affidarsi a SeaMonkey, suo diretto successore.

This version main goal is to optimize the code, removing some old parts. Full localizations for Italian and French (by Yann Ricquebourg) has been added, partial localizations for Japanise, German and Duch are also available.
